Isla Mujeres is a small Mexican island located where the Carribean sea and the Gulf of Mexico meet. Before visiting Isla Mujeres I had imagined it as a beautiful island paradise with virgin beaches. But who was I kidding – after all the island is only 13 km from Mexico’s tourist hotspot Cancún.
While the beaches on the island are truly stunning, I felt like the atmosphere was slightly destroyed by the over-crowded beaches and the numerous boats in the water. After having visited Mexico’s most beautiful beach near Todos Santos, it was difficult to find a place that would come close to that. Nevertheless, Isla Mujeres is definitely worth visiting and there’s more to do besides sunbathing on crowded beaches.
I stayed on Isla Mujeres for two days and one night. This is enough time to see everything as the island is rather small. If you just want to visit quickly it can also be done on a day trip. However, I recommend staying at least one night to enjoy the calm morning on the beach and also to watch the sunset.
Here’s a list of the top 6 things to do on Isla Mujeres:
Table of Contents
Rent a golf cart
It’s common to rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres to get around on the island. These golf carts allow you to comfortably visit the island from north to south without sweating while walking in the Mexican heat.
The daily rate for a golf cart is about 50-60 € and there are numerous rental agencies on the island. In case you arrive at Isla Mujeres in the afternoon you should book your golf cart in advance as they sell out quickly in high season.
I didn’t rent a golf cart on Isla Mujeres as I found the daily rate quite expensive and I enjoy walking when I travel. However, it is a great experience for sure to cruise around the island in a golf cart and you can visit more places in a shorter period of time.
Sunrise on Playa Norte
One way to enjoy the beach without crowds is by going there early in the morning. Getting up early on Isla Mujeres definitely pays off. There’s hardly anyone on the beach and during sunrise it feels like you’re in paradise. The best beach to watch the sunrise is Playa Norte. The pink-ish sky paired with a completely empty beach are stunning.
If getting up for sunrise is too early for you just try to get to the beach before noon. In the morning there are always fewer people while it gets super crowded in the afternoon.
Swim with Whale Sharks
If you happen to be on Isla Mujeres between June and September you have the chance to swim with whale sharks. These months are Whale Shark season on Isla Mujeres and you can encounter many of the majestic giants of the deep in the turquoise waters around the island.
There are several agencies that offer a Whale Shark tour on Isla Mujeres and you can directly visit their office to book your trip. Usually, it’s more expensive if you book your tour in advance online. Check several agencies to get the best rate. If you’re looking for a tour at a low price your shouldn’t pay more than 100€.
Discover the street art on Isla Mujeres
While most tourists spend their days on the beach, there’s much more to explore on the island. Take a walk and get lost between colorful houses and street art.
Typically for Mexico you can find beautiful street art on almost every corner. Just keep your eyes open and pay attention to the details on the walls you walk by.
Best Restaurant on Isla Mujeres
My absolute favorite restaurant on Isla Mujeres was Aroma Isla. They serve healthy meals paired with traditional Mexican dishes that are prepared in an innovative way.
Aroma Isla is a lovely little restaurant that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. I really wanted to get one of their smoothie bowls but unfortunately they only serve them for breakfast and we got there too late. Instead I ordered nachos with mango-guacamole, a quinoa bowl and a fresh carrot-orange juice. Everything was delicious and I’d definitely go there again!
Have a drink at Tarzan Beach Club
Tarzan Beach Club is the perfect place to take a break on the beach and enjoy a cold cocktail. Their Piña Coladas are inexpensive, big and most important: really good! Especially during sunset the view from the beach is beautiful.
I truly enjoyed my time on Isla Mujeres. The atmosphere is completely different to mainland Mexico and the colourful houses reminded me of Cuba. In case you’re curious to explore more Mexican islands in this area, make sure to visit Isla Cozumel and Isla Holbox.
Hopefully, this guide helps you to plan a memorable stay on Isla Mujeres. I’d love to hear your opinion or experience in the comments!
